Your StepChildren Are Champions. See Rita Pierson’s TedTalk (attached)

I have often said that it is difficult to know if we are happy or unhappy with our life as a stepmother because we don’t know who we are or the role we are supposed to play in our families.  In the past, I have written about our roles.  Are we friends?  Quasi parents?  Memory makers?  Event planners?  Then, I saw this TED Talk given by Rita Pierson called Every Kid Needs a Champion.  As soon as I saw it, I just knew that Ms. Pierson’s message applied to #stepmothers and #stepfathers as well. She exhumes positivity as she explains how to instill that optimistic view of life into your children.  It made me think that as much as kids don’t learn from people they don’t like, stepchildren don’t hear people they don’t like as well.  Maybe, we should think about being human and not being afraid to apologize.  How can we push our stepchildren forward?

Here is a short biography of Rita Pierson, taken from the TedTalk site.

Rita Pierson, a teacher for 40 years, once heard a colleague say, “They don’t pay me to like the kids.” Her response: “Kids don’t learn from people they don’t like.’” A rousing call to educators to believe in their students and actually connect with them on a real, human, personal level.

Rita F. Pierson has spent her entire life in or around the classroom, having followed both her parents and grandparents into a career as an educator.  Get inspired by Ms. Pierson and start cheering your stepchildren on!
